UPCOMING EVENTS
We have scheduled a series of playdates for the spring and summer for Hawthorne youngsters and their families. This is a great way to get to know your Hawthorne peers and help your child make some friends before the first day of school. Please stop by to one, most or all! See calendar for dates and details.
RECENT SUCCESSES
HAWTHORNE STUDENT ART EXHIBIT AT GERALDINE'S
From March 5 to 31, 2013 the gorgeous artwork of 144 Hawthorne Elementary School students was on display at Geraldine's Counter. The Community Tree Mosaic is colorful “quilt” of paintings by kindergartners and first graders representing Hawthorne’s tremendous growth as a community. We sold many of these masterpieces — first at Geraldine's then at our Masters of the Future auction. Thse funds will support Hawthorne as we evolve into a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) school.
If you have any questions about this project, please email volunteer artist in residence Claudette Glubka at claudetteg7@aol.com.
Saturday, April 6, 2013, 6-10pm at the Northwest African American Museum. Our biggest fundraiser of the year was a huge success! Proceeds from our silent and live auctions will support Hawthorne's evolution to a Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM) curriculum.
S.T.E.A.M PANEL DISCUSSION
Wednesday, March 20, 2013, 6-7:30pm in the Hawthorne gymnasium.
A Community discussion centered around Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM) hosted by Friends of Hawthorne PTA. There will be several guest speakers presenting including Randy Engstrom from the Seattle Arts Commission, along with Principal Scott and school staff. This is your chance to learn more and ask questions about the STEAM curriculum, how it is growing at Hawthorne Elementary and other area schools, and the resources available that can add STEAM learning opportunities for all of our students. For more information contact FOH President Pete Intravartolo at president@friendsofhawthorne.org.

2011-2012 EVENT Highlights
A strong community is being built! Parents, family members, Principal Scott, teachers, a WEA rep, District employees, education writers and representatives from the Parents Union were all in attendance at the Family Center Grand Opening on March 19, 2012. There were a lot of great conversations happening around Hawthorne, our students, education issues in Seattle and beyond.
Hawthorne has a new playground!!
On March 21st 100 principals from NAESP helped build the structure. They worked hard, turning wrenches and hammering away and Student ambassadors brought them refreshments. During lunch, the principals enjoyed watching our school choir, Voices Of Hawthorne. On their way out, students greeted them with smiles, cheers and thank you letters. Click here for photos!
Last March over 80 people participated at Hawthorne's Community Day Of Service! A SPS District employee said it was the largest turnout he had ever seen at a school day of service. It was wonderful and empowering to see Hawthorne staff, students, incoming families, District staff and neighborhood community members coming together to work on this first phase of our playground project. Additional progress was made completing the new play area along with beautifying the landscape around the school and the p-patch. Starbucks donated coffee and pastries to keep everyone moving and brought along their own volunteer crew. A big thanks to Gretchen DeDecker from Seattle Public Schools for helping coordinate this project from the beginning. The new playground is scheduled to open in late April.
