After School Enrichment (ASE) Committee

The After-School Enrichment (ASE) Program is a volunteer-run FOH program that aims to provide high-quality after-school enrichment classes for Hawthorne students. It takes hundreds of volunteer hours each session to organize and run the ASE program. We are a small committee of parents and we need additional volunteers to help keep the program running smoothly and sustainably.

Please email enrichment@friendsofhawthorne.org for more information on all volunteer opportunties.

CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Communications: 1 volunteer needed

4-6 hours for the month around registration at the start of each session (3X/year), 1-2 hours/month subsequently. Work with the planning team to communicate with families on all aspects of ASE (website, session catalog, email, text blasts, surveys, fundraising, and event outreach).

On-site volunteers: 3 volunteers needed for Spring 2025 ASE session

1.5-2 hours/week one day a week during the ASE session (Monday, Tuesday or Thursday). Work with school staff to make sure each class session goes smoothly and students are checked-in and out of class safely. On-site ASE representative during classes. On-site volunteers who can commit to volunteering on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays for the whole session will receive a free ASE class for their student.

Programs Team (Class Development): 1 volunteer needed

4-8 hours/month year round. Work with the Programs Team to conceive and develop class offerings for each session. This includes working with school administration, class providers, Hawthorne teachers, and parent/student instructors to set up classes, organize the schedule and coordinate the scholarship program. Looking for someone who is excited about new class ideas, connecting with class providers/instructors and helping manage nitty gritty details for each session.

Lottery Data Scientist (lite): 1 volunteer needed

3-5 hours per session (3x/year). Work with the planning team who designed a pivot table to truly randomize and make equitable our lottery process. Looking for someone who's comfortable working with data (spreadsheet ninja) and has a good sense for program management (identifying requirements and evolving established processes). Some basic programming/comfort with macros is a plus, but not required. Fans of CC Bakery or similar are encouraged to apply, because the Lottery team will share snacks!

Registration/Session Management: 1 volunteer needed

5 hours on the day of the class lottery (3x/year), 30 min/day for 3 weeks around each session registration (3x/year). Work with the registration team to manage and run the registration process (lottery, waitlist management, assisting families with registration and questions), and sessions-in-progress (on-site volunteers, rosters, family questions, etc).

Volunteer Instructors

Are you a parent or family member interested in teaching an ASE class? We have teams of volunteers teaching classes each session in areas such as sports, crafts, chess and environmental education. Come work with our Hawthorne kids and share your skills and hobbies! Volunteer instructors receive a free class for their student during the session they volunteer.
